A few weeks ago the couple were married on stage during the Friday Night Jamboree among friends, family and Jamboree goers. The musicians and dancers looked on as the bridesmaids graced the stage and the couple committed their lives together in front of a packed house. All of us at the store are proud to be a part of this special occasion and wish Donald and Serena a life full of joy, love, and more dancing!

Old Time Country Dance with Whitetop Mountain Band
Saturday, May 15th – 7:30 PM, $8.00 at the door!

The Floyd Country Store is famous for old time dancing, and we feel truly honored that some of the great Appalachian old time bands love to play on our stage. One of our regular Saturday Night bands is The Whitetop Mountain Band, a family-based band from the highest mountains of Virginia. Whitetop, Virginia is an area rich in the old time music tradition, and this band has deep roots in mountain music. The members have done much to preserve the Whitetop region’s style of old time fiddling and banjo picking and are legendary musicians and teachers of the style.

The instant the Whitetop Mountain Band strikes up the music this Saturday night the dance floor will start to hum. There will be flatfooting, clogging, two stepping and some square dances. Get up and join in the fun, or just sit back and watch the high energy crowd while you listen to some of the finest heritage mountain music around. Check out the Whitetop Mountain Band’s CDs HERE!

He rose to fame when he became the lead singer for New Grass Revival. He and band mates Sam Bush, Bela Fleck and Pat Flynn introduced a new generation of music fans to an explosive, experimental brand of bluegrass…Newgrass! John is currently touring with the Doobie Brothers Band. Don’t miss your opportunity to see this great performer at the Country Store!

He found success in numerous guitar contests, winning the Knoxville World’s Fair Guitar Championship, the Galax Fiddler’s Convention Guitar Contest and the Wayne Henderson Guitar Championship. Brandon Davis was born in Galax, Virginia. Living in the musically rich hills of southwest Virginia, he got the opportunity to hear and play with some of the best roots based musicians in the country. Brandon started competing in local contests and fiddlers conventions allowing him the chance to perform and jam with different musicians sharpening his skills. In 1997 Davis competed and won the prestigious Wayne Henderson guitar championship. Don’t miss your opportunity to see these three amazing guitar players share the same stage!

Between June 18 and June 27 we’ll have many presentations honoring the history of the store. And all through the year you’ll notice special touches, special products and special events to mark this 100th year. We’d also like to hear from you. The band first appeared in the late 1980’s when Mac Traynham (banjo) and Shay Garriock (fiddle) teamed up with John Hylton(guitar) and Heidi Blevins (bass) to play at a small fiddler’s convention held in Ivanhoe Virginia. When it comes to old time dance music this band is the real deal with a great repertoire at their fingertips.

As part of ‘The Crooked Road’, Southwest Virginia’s heritage music trail, The Floyd Country Store shares the honor of being in The Distinctive Dozen Destinations picked by The National Trust for Historic Preservation.

In a special ceremony at the store on February 3, Rob Nieweg of the National Trust for Historic Preservation announced the award, which honors ‘The Crooked Road’ as one of the top twelve places to visit in the USA.

Wayne Henderson and Friends spiced up the event with some fine Appalachian Music, and Wayne played back up guitar when two young students of The Floyd Music School, Laurel and Hannah Brooke played a twin fiddle version of The 8th of January. Tradionally in this area the 8th of January was a major day of celebration. This year February 3rd turned out to be another day to celebrate!

You can go to the website of The National Trust for Historic Preservation and see a list of all twelve Distinctive Destinations, and cast a vote for ‘The Crooked Road’ while you are there.

Isn’t it Time for a Dance?

We don’t know what our caller Shirley Ferris saw out there on the dance floor, but we know for sure people were kicking up their heels! And after all this winter weather and snow days we’re all ready to get back out on the dance floor.

On Saturday, February 20 there’s another chance for great music and dancing. If you want to hear the real thing in Appalachian Traditional Music, here it is. One of our favorite old time dance bands, The New Ballard’s Branch Bogtrotters, described as follows by Joe Wilson, Executive Director of the National Council for the Traditional Arts:

Around a dozen years ago a group of musicians from the Galax, VA area formed a new band. This group The New Ballard’s Branch Bogtrotters took their name, in part from the original Bogtrotters of the 1930′s and also because band leader Dennis Hall lives on Ballard’s Branch. Rounding out the Bogtrotters lineup are: Eddie Bond on Fiddle, Dennis Hall on guitar, Josh Ellis with clawhammer banjo, Jesse Morris on Bass and Leon Frost on mandolin. Old time music is alive and well, and continues to attract fans of all ages. The New Ballard’s Branch Bogtrotter’s remain a leading force in carrying the traditional music of the Virginia/Carolina Blue Ridge into the new millenium.

The organization foucses on ‘Family, Friends and Community’ and has plans to share and learn about organic gardening, preserving, quilting and rug making. The next meeting at the store is at noon on Thursday, February 25th. Call Hilda Collins (593 2201) for further information.

This Saturday, October 31, there will be the added fun of dressing up for the occasion.

The Old Dominion Cloggers will be wearing their dance costumes, ready to give a clogging demonstration. Who knows who else might show up. Think of the possibilities!

Great family friendly entertainment. $8 at the door. Children 10 and under free. Costume optional.

Find Local Music
Enjoy browsing our collection or ask one of our staff to help you.

For easy home shopping try our online store for a collection of CDs, DVDs, books, USA made toys, apothecary, housewares and Floyd Country store logo goods.

If you can’t find what you are looking for email info at floydcountrystore.com or call 540 745 4563 and we’ll try to help you in person.

Where did you say you were from?
What keeps the Friday Night Jamboree alive is the loyal following of local musicians, dancers and folks who come to listen to the music, chat with friends and catch up on the local news. They are the heart and soul of the country store and they have been supporting the Jamboree year round for over a quarter of a century!

You can also be sure that there will be visitors from distant places in the audience. Every Friday we give away a Floyd Country Store hat to the person who has traveled the farthest. And if we are not sure whether the person from Eygpt or the one from Brazil had the longest journey we check it out on our handy map!

Youngsters at Work

Don’t worry about the young folk. They are busy creating their own brand of Floyd culture. We are happy to see them using the Country Store to show off their talents.

<img class="size-full wp-image-384" title="youthdouble600" src="http://www.floydcountrystore.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/youthdouble6004.jpg" alt="Left: Mike Mitchel with fiddler Laurel Brooke at the Floyd Music School Fall Recital; Right: Members of the Young Actors Coop in their latest production.
The Floyd Music School, under the guidance of Mike Mitchell of the Mitchell Music Company (across the street from The Floyd Country Store), regularly encourages students of all ages to get out on stage and share their talents. The Young Actors Coop presented their play “An Inconvenient Spoof” to a delighted audience at the store on October 24. This talented group of Floydians wrote and performed the play in celebration of the International Day of Climate Action.

Thanks to all these young people for bringing their energy to the store and to our community.

It seems as though our ice cream counter is in demand whatever the weather.

We have a few seasonal specials for fall and winter. Try our pumpkin milkshake, made with pumpkin, ginger syrup, crushed gingersnaps and cream or treat yourself to a classic banana split. And watch out for our eggnog shake and peppermint stick sundaes as winter rolls around.

Our lunch counter is open 6 days a week, serving sandwiches, salads, barbecue, soups and home baked goodies. For the cooler days we have hearty bowls of our homemade beef chili and chicken Brunswick stew, with traditional Appalachian style skillet baked cornbread.

Now you can get the real feel of the Floyd Country Store on CD. Recorded at Saturday Night old time dances at the store, the album features a great collection of dancing favorites. You’ll hear a square dance called and a wide selection of flatfooting and two-step tunes. Its hard to resist smiling and tapping your feet along with the enthusiastic dance crowd. The album is available for sale at the store and online.

Harvest Festival Saturday September 19
Floyd will be celebrating the richness of our community at our Harvest Festival on Saturday. Based at the Recreational Park and spilling out through the town, the festival will highlight Floyd’s agriculture and heritage.

We’ll be celebrating at the store with book signings from local authors Fred First and Shayley Martin followed by an old time dance in the evening featuring The Slate Mountain Ramblers. The Ramblers have been a mainstay of the dance and festival culture in central and western North Carolina and southwest Virginia for 24 years and are still going strong. Headed up by fiddler, Richard Bowman from Ararat, Virginia, the Ramblers started as group of friends and morphed into a family band over the years.

Show starts at 7:30pm, Admission $7

Watch out for cloggers!
Sometimes we are lucky enough to see a demonstration of how good the local dancing can be, when a group of our best dancers works together to show some hot steps. For our last Saturday night dance the Old Dominion Cloggers showed up in full regalia and put on a show for us. Other evenings we’ll ask some of the regulars to give us an informal demonstration.

Its amazing how fast well practiced feet can move when there’s a good fiddler calling the tunes!

It only gets better!

You won’t believe it unless you’ve been in downtown Floyd on Friday Night. The Floyd Country Store is hopping and on a warm evening the music spills out all down the street. Our thoughtful town planners added some places for musicians and Friday Night Strollers to gather-and gather they do!

You’ll always find some high class jams with bluegrass, gospel, country and old time musicians, in endless combinations, making music late into the night. Occasionally Elmer will bring his guitar and join Kendall to sing the blues. And if you’re a musician there’s always a place for you to join in and try something new.

Can we make your picture?
Thousands of photos get taken in Floyd every Friday-cell phones, point-and-shoots and monster pro cameras are all flashing.

One regular visitor takes the low-tech route, and for a very modest fee offers to draw your portrait on the spot. In just a few minutes you can get an unusual momento of your visit.

You will find many of other businesses open in Floyd too-restaurants, coffee shops, galleries and a great hometown barber.

Banana Malt Anyone?

Remember those drugstore milkshakes made with hand dipped ice cream and loving care? We have a full range of sundaes, floats, shakes and malts.

At this time of year we can make you fresh fruit shake with our local blueberries and blackberries.

Our lunch counter is open 6 days a week, serving sandwiches, salads, barbecue, soups and home baked goodies.

Appalachian Memories

Photographer Michael Harrington has created a beautiful record of the people of Appalachia and their unique lifestyles. This set of cards features images of everyday life taken over several decades in Virginia and North Carolina.

You’ll find farmers, miners, musicians, housewives, and many others in this collection available in the store or online.

It will be hard to resist getting out on the dance floor when the Dry Hill Draggers strike up the music on Saturday. Known as a hard driving dance band, this group from neighboring Franklin County, feature: Carl Scott-fiddle, Monroe Boyd-banjo, Cordell Pinkerton-guitar, Jimmy Boyd-banjo and Doug Cecil-bass

The group was formed by Jimmy Boyd and his brother Billy 28 years ago. All of Jimmy’s uncles played old time music. Although Jimmy didn’t pick up a banjo until he was in his thirties he got hooked on the old time sound. As he says “The old-time music drew me in to play it. Music like that is in your genes.” Now, the band consists of second generation players who carry on the unique string band tradition of our region.

Come out and enjoy the chance to watch the show or let this great band carry you through an evening of flatfooting, two steps and squares.

Tickets are $7 at the door: Show starts at 7:30.
Whitetop Mountain Band

Another great evening of music and dance at the Country Store. Following in the great tradition of music from the Whitetop Mountain area of Virginia, the Spencer family and friends bring with them echos of the great old time traditional players like Albert Hash, Jont Blevins and Corbit Stamper. Not forgetting, of course, that this band brings their own brand of sizzling mountain music and reminds us that the traditions of the Appalachian Mountains are very much alive.

The current lineup’s five members are fiddler Thornton Spencer and his multi-instrumentalist wife Emily and their daughter Martha, mandolinist Jackson Cunningham and acoustic bassist Debbie Bramer. Emily and Martha split the bulk of lead-vocal and harmony duties, and they sing with beauty and intensity in the pure Appalachian style.
Tickets are $7 at the door
Show starts at 7:30.
Album by The Whitetop Mountain Band. Loafer’s Dream, the most recent release from Whitetop, showcases the breadth of their skills, from old time ballads, to bluegrass classics, to great flatfooting tunes.
“Loafer’s Dream is a beautifully crafted collection of songs. You’ll have a hard time deciding whether to linger on the porch swing and listen to them sing or learn to flatfoot so you can get up and dance!” Katy Daley, WAMU’s Bluegrass Country

Its a Scene

Friday night on the street in Floyd is a world of music. When you visit the store, take time to go outside and check the street scene. There’s music everywhere with young and old, professionals and beginners sharing the platform. No telling who you’ll bump into strolling the street, belting out a bluegrass favorite, or crooning an old time ballad. You may even find some midnight ramblers!

There’s more going on in Floyd too, with many businesses staying open late. You can find wonderful art for sale, enjoy a latte or eat pizza from a wood-fired oven.

Try the Pie

If you haven’t yet experienced a slice of the country Store pie put it on your list of things to do. Our baker, Bea, brings in big, fluffy, creamy key-lime, coconut and chocolate cream pies, fresh baked and delicious. And, its hard to resist a piece of home-baked apple or peach pie with a good scoop of vanilla ice cream. For those who take a low-cal approach we have fresh fruit sundaes and Stoneyfield organic yogurt. So, save room for dessert!

Portrait of a Store

Artist Frank Duncan took on the challenge of portraying the scene at Floyd Country Store on a jamboree night. The resulting painting is a gloriously accurate representation of the store, the people and the fun in Floyd on a typical Friday Night. For those who have visited the store the challenge is to pick out some of our regulars (the “Fixtures” as they are called around here). With the stroke of his brush Frank has managed to capture the essence of the Friday night crowd and all the characters that make the Country Store such a special place.

Prints of the picture are available at the store, or online.

Don’t forget we have Floyd Country Store Gift Certificates, available on line or in the store.
