The Floyd Country Store is more than a music venue. It has become a traditional gathering place on Friday nights for musicians, dancers, and visitors from all over the world. The Friday Night Jamboree is an outstanding and authentic experience you can share with new visitors to Floyd.
Many of those who attend the Jamboree are regulars, and for them, the Jamboree is a place to see old friends week after week. But the Jamboree also gets visitors every week from all across the country, and very frequently from around the world.
Articles about the Jamboree have appeared in many state and national newspapers, and in August of 1999, National Public Radio aired a ten minute segment about the Jamboree on the Morning Edition program. The March, 2000 issue of Country Living magazine identified the Floyd County Store as one of the two best places in the country to hear bluegrass music (the other place was a club in New York City).
At the Jamboree, we’re all very proud of and grateful to the musicians who bring their instruments and their talent to the store every week. The show starts every Friday at 6:30 p.m and they will play till we close around 10:30p.m.
And the great music isn’t just heard on stage. During the warmer months, the Jamboree becomes something of a miniature fiddler’s convention, with bands playing in the alleys, driveways and parking lots. When the weather cools down, two or three groups can usually be found pickin’ in one of our upstairs rooms.
The Jamboree operates on “Granny’s Rules” – no smoking, no drinking alcohol, no bad language, and no conduct unbecoming to a lady or a gentleman. It’s a great time for the whole family, and you’re likely to see kids from six to ninety-six out on our hardwood dance floor. You may even be one of them.
Visitors, especially tourists from the distant urban areas, will stand hesitantly outside the door, watching dancers wheel and sway to the music. Then after a few minutes, they find themselves tapping their toes to the irresistible beat of bluegrass music and they step lightly over the threshold and join the happy dancers in front of the stage.
Many a flatlander has found out they have clogging in their blood when that old time music hits their soul.
So come see us at the Jamboree! Admission is only $4.00. The Jamboree is a kind of happening that is hard to find anymore – musicians coming together to play just for the love of the music, and people getting together just for the fun of it. It’s an experience you won’t soon forget.
Please take note that seating is limited. In good weather, there is plenty of room outside to enjoy the music, but during bad weather, the store can get quite crowded. If you want to ensure that you have a seat, it is probably a good idea to come early.
