Old Time Style of Fiddlin' Aurthur Smith with Adam Tanner

The Handmade Music School presents The Old Time Style of Fiddlin’ Arthur Smith with Adam Tanner on Saturday, November 14, 2020 at 3:00pm EDT. The workshop will be presented via Crowdcast as part of our Handmade at Home online series. Cost is $1 to $100 (suggested donation of $15).

Old Time Style of Fiddlin' Aurthur Smith with Adam Tanner

Arthur Smith from Bold Springs, TN burst on to the early country music scene in 1927 with a fiddle style unlike any other heard before. He often punctuated his melodies with left hand excursions up the neck of the fiddle sliding from one chord to another with bluesy aplomb. Traditional tunes mixed with his now legendary original instrumentals and songs made Smith an early star on The Grand Old Opry. In terms of bowing, Smith was as good as any of his contemporaries at utilizing the rhythmic short bow style commonly heard in square dance fiddling however it was the use of long phrases arranged with compound slurs and accents which set the stage for all country fiddling styles that came after it.

This workshop with focus on two classic Arthur Smith breakdowns in “G” out of first position, Fiddler’s Dream and Darlin’ Honey. If you are hoping to expand your vocabulary of bowing techniques and want to experiment with smoother phrasing, this is the workshop for you.

About the Instructor

Adam Tanner grew up in northern California and was exposed to old-time and bluegrass music in his early teens. Proficient on fiddle, mandolin, and guitar, he spent countless hours slowing down records trying to pick out every detail of the traditional music he loved. Adam’s approach to playing reflects the diversity of styles heard on the early 78rpm discs and field recordings from which he draws his greatest inspiration. Over the last 20 years, Adam has toured in both the US and Europe as a member of The Crooked Jades, The Hunger Mountain Boys, and The Twilite Broadcasters.

Adam has taught old time fiddle, guitar, and mandolin at The Swannanoa Gathering, Mars Hill College Blue Ridge Old Time Week, Augusta Heritage Old Time Week, The Port Townsend Acoustic Blues Workshop, and Mike Compton’s Monroe Mandolin Camp. Adam currently has eight recordings in his catalog and has written an ebook on old time mandolin entitled “Shuffle of the Pick” available in Apple iBooks and Amazon. Adam is currently on staff at East Tennessee State University’s Bluegrass, Old-Time, and Country Music program.

Adam’s workshops are taught by ear. He will provide links to video tutorials created for the music covered.
