Flatfoot Dancing with Sophie Moeckel

July 15 @ 5:00 pm 6:00 pm

The Handmade Music School presents a flatfoot dance workshop with Sophie Moeckel on Friday, July 15, 2022 from 5:00-6:00pm, prior to the Friday Night Jamboree at the Floyd Country Store. $10 suggested donation.

Flatfoot Dance with Sophie Moeckel

Following a brief history of Appalachian percussive dance traditions and a demonstration, we’ll dive into the basics of flatfooting and clogging steps to get you out on the dance floor and try some fun variations on those steps.

Come ready to dance in either leather bottoms or smooth-soled shoes and stay for the dance to practice your new moves! We’ll plan to dance on the back deck, weather permitting.

About Sophie Moeckel

Sophie Moeckel grew up surrounded by music in the Blue Ridge mountains. She fell in love with the community aspect of old time music as a Floyd JAMs (Junior Appalachian Musicians) student, where she later taught fiddle and dance and served as assistant director. She’s been a part of the Handmade Music School team since its beginning, serving in many roles throughout the years including Director of Operations and fiddle and dance teacher and is passionate about passing along Appalachian music and dance traditions. She loves sharing the joy of music by playing for dancers at the Friday Night Jamboree at The Floyd Country Store, jamming and dancing with friends, and most of all teaching and inspiring young people. Sophie is currently pursuing studies at Warren Wilson College and plays with the Southeastern Western North Carolina Ramblers.
