Old Time Rhythm Section with Andrew Small and Ashlee Watkins
May 26, 2021 @ 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm
Rain Date: June 9
The Handmade Music School presents Old Time Rhythm Section: Building an Ensemble Sound with Character with Andrew Small and Ashlee Watkins on Wednesday, May 26, 2021 from 3:00 – 4:30pm EDT. This workshop will be held outdoors in the backyard of the Floyd Country Store in downtown Floyd, VA following COVID-19 guidelines. Cost is $30.
With a focus on the rhythmic building blocks within old time music ensembles, this workshop will provide participants with a clearer understanding of the complementary roles of the various instruments and how they lock in to create a tight ensemble sound. We will explore how to be more responsive within a musical setting and how different instruments can use simple tools like leading lines, bass runs, chord voicings, and strumming patterns to tastefully embellish and add character to an ensemble. We will consider musical space as we compare various instrument combinations and determine how we might approach adding another accompanying voice to the mix. All instruments are welcome in this workshop!
