The Floyd Radio Show
September 1, 2018 @ 7:30 pm| $15.00 – $90.00
Join us for opening night of Season 8 of The Floyd Radio Show on Saturday, September 1, 2018 at 7:30 pm. Guests include Allison DeGroot and Tatiana Hargreaves, After Jack and The Original Orchard Grass String Band. Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 day of show, or $90 for the season.
Allison DeGroot combines love for old-time music, technical skill and a creative approach to the banjo forming her own sound – unique and full of personality. Although firmly rooted in old-time and music, she loves to collaborate and create outside this genre, pushing the boundaries of the clawhammer banjo. Allison has toured all over the world with various groups, performing at venues such as Newport Folk Festival, Rockygrass, Hardly Strictly, Winnipeg Folk Festival and Tønder Festival. The music scene in her hometown of Winnipeg, Canada, immersion in Appalachian old-time communities, a performance degree at Berklee College of Music in Boston, and touring extensively throughout North America and Europe have all had a great impact on her playing. She is currently performing with Bruce Molsky’s new project Molsky’s Mountain Drifters and The Goodbye Girls and Allison de Groot & Tatiana Hargreaves.
Tatiana Hargreaves grew up playing violin in Oregon, but steeping herself in the archives of Appalachian music and studying with the masters, she has become a well-known name in the world of old-time music. In 2009, she became the second woman to win first place at the Clifftop Appalachian Fiddle Contest, and since that time, she has toured with a number of prominent musicians, including Dave Rawlings and Gillian Welch, Laurie Lewis, Bruce Molsky, and Darol Anger. She released her first solo album, “Started Out To Ramble,” in 2009, and more recently, she played on Laurie Lewis’s Grammy-nominated album, “The Hazel And Alice Sessions.” Tatiana, who has a degree in Ethnomusicology from Hampshire College, is dedicated to respecting and preserving old-time and bluegrass traditions while simultaneously seeking her own musical voice and exploring new ways of approaching these styles.
After Jack is a musical celebration of togetherness. Named 2014 Americana Vocal Group of the Year by the Appalachian Cultural Music Association, the trio couples a modern sensibility with distinctly old-time energy to blend bluegrass, gospel and folk elements. Combine your most beloved musical memories with a foot-stomping string band and top it off with harmonies that spring straight from the soul of the mountains, and you’ve got After Jack.
Emily, Mary and Rachel met while working as performers in a professional theatre company. In forming the band, they realized they were merging three unique musical perspectives. Though often labeled “Americana,” their sound, ability to reach the heart of an audience, and the incredible joy that they bring to the stage cannot be adequately captured by one word.
After Jack’s first full-length album, released on Travianna Records, was produced by Aaron Ramsey of Mountain Heart, and is already receiving international airplay. The album’s title, “Echo,” is a notion that describes the band’s songwriting – a collection of stories to be shared and experiences that can only be lived. It’s also an invitation, to all who encounter it, to share those moments. With an ambitious touring schedule, the trio can be heard at major festivals and venues all along the East Coast.
The Original Orchard Grass String Band
The Original Orchard Grass Old Time Band has been playing for so many years that they find it hard to keep track. Let’s just say they have been playing and singin’ old-time mountain music for a very long time. And not only in the Roanoke-Salem, Virginia area where they grew up, but across this country they played and sang into a legendary place in sweet, easy listening, mountain music.
