The Floyd Radio Show
September 7, 2019 @ 7:30 pm| $15.00
Join us for The Floyd Radio Show Season 9 premiere on Saturday, September 7, 2019 at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 day of show. Season passes are available here. Tonight’s show celebrates the 50th anniversary of Virginia is for Lovers, and brings in special guests The Crooked Road Ramblers, Kelley and the Cowboys and Devon Sproule.
The Crooked Road Ramblers are an old-time band from Southwest Virginia, steeped in the traditional music of the Blue Ridge. You can find them providing a mixture of instrumental dance music, old ballads and traditional country and bluegrass at notable venues across the region like the Carter Family Fold, Houstonfest, the Albert Hash Memorial Festival, and the Wayne Henderson Festival. They have won 1st place in the old-time band category at the Ashe County, Alleghany County, Laurel Bloomery, Fries & Union Grove Fiddlers Conventions in addition to being named the old time instrumental group of the year at the 2014 Blue Ridge Acoustic Uprising.
The band was started by fiddler Kilby Spencer (Whitetop Mountain Band) and includes Kelley Breiding on banjo, John Perry and Donald Hill on guitar, Karen Carr on bass, and Wayne Dye on mandolin.
Kelley and The Cowboys are a 4 piece band from NC, led by female vocalist Kelley Breiding. The band puts their signature sound on the old standards as well as original music, in a style influenced by early forms of western swing, rockabilly, country, and blues. Kelley and The Cowboys always excite the crowd with their high energy and amazing musicianship no matter what the musical tastes or age of the listeners may be. How do they do it? With Kelley’s mesmerizing vocals and barn burner attitude, the nostalgic sound of Jimmy Tremor’s arch-top guitar, Colby’s thrilling feats on the upright bass, and Steve-O’s status as a human metronome. When you pair all this together with a relentless energy for the crowd, it’s a real dream for those who are out to scoot their boots. Having played the East coast club and festival since 2005, they have really made a name for themselves as one of the greatest dance bands around.
Devon Sproule’s music welcomes the magical and the tangible. It celebrates human complication in the language of nature. It is North American music with weirdo roots.
Since 2007, Sproule’s recordings have been released by Tin Angel Records, based in Coventry, England. She collaborates regularly with Toronto-based band Bernice and producer Sandro Perri. In Summer 2015, she recorded songs from a new collection, “The Gold String,” in Yukon and Nova Scotia. Besides Canada and America, Sproule also tours regularly in Europe and has traveled with her music to Africa and Australia.
“Sproule’s lyrics glance off each other arrestingly, juxtaposing images.” (Financial Times). “Her quirky affectations bring to mind Bjork, and forays into the dark, Michelle Shocked.” (Village Voice)
