BigMama Joy
There is no risk of confusing bigmama joy with anyone else on the music scene today, because she has managed to forge her own sound in an era when many other musicians strive to sound the same. bigmama joy’s music is warm, rich and full of story. She is originally from Baltimore and currently lives in Floyd County, Virginia. As she puts it, “I took a long, steep road to get there. From being homeless, to being pregnant in a shelter, to theater & poetry slams & art shows, I’ve traveled all over the country with a guitar slung on my back. I started out as a jazz singer. I’ve had so many lives, it’s crazy. I shoulda been dead if it weren’t for my angels.”
Black Twig Pickers
Banjos and fiddles, boards and bones in hand, the Black Twig Pickers dove into a living tradition of old-time music that surrounds their homes along the Virginia-West Virginia line and never looked back. Both scholars of the regional sounds and advocates of an ecstatic and highly personal approach to the music, the Twigs hold down local dance and bar gigs, play all manner of celebrations and every so often, hit the road.
