Six Ways to Enjoy The Floyd Country Store at Home

The Floyd Radio Show Podcast

A tradition for 9 months of the year, The Floyd Radio Show is now entering its 10th season. The event is modeled after traditional variety shows written for radio and includes appearances from three different musical acts per show, comedy skits, interviews, stories, jingles, and jokes. The show allows for a variety of musicians to come together for a night of fun and spontaneity. Each show is recorded in front of a live audience, then released as a 60-minute podcast, and every episode of The Floyd Radio Show since it started in 2010 is available to stream or download for free. That’s 81 episodes, which makes for over three straight days of Floyd Radio Show entertainment! Make sure to subscribe to the podcast on Apple Podcasts or Android!

Mac Traynham’s Music of Our Mountains hosted by the Handmade Music School

Floyd County master musician and luthier Mac Traynham is best known for his banjo building and playing, as well as his fine fiddling. He has been playing and teaching traditional music in Floyd, Virginia for decades and is a wealth of knowledge about the history of our local music traditions. A few years ago, Mac started sharing tunes and their stories to a group of friends by email. He has diligently shared one tune per week and has created quite a collection so far!

“The tunes I choose are ones found in the repertoire of some old-timers – primarily from Floyd, Franklin, and Carroll Counties. This region is special to me because it is my home and it seems to me that the native old-time music here has been underrated. These tune nuggets are in their natural state; perhaps a bit rough, with some dirt and generally unpolished. Yet, their value is immense to me as I listen to this stuff and more daily, trying to get the details in my head so it affects my sound in a positive way. I am sharing these recordings weekly in the interest of keeping our ‘local’ music alive here in our local jams, assuming some of you will learn the melodic and rhythmic details of the version. The details can make the difference between a generic version or a ‘cool’ tasteful version. I hope you’ll agree.”

The Handmade Music School aims to make these tunes and stories available to a larger audience through our blog. We invite you to give them a listen, learn more about Southwest Virginia music traditions, and follow us as we share more local tunes from Mac’s collection! We add new entries to the site every week, each containing a local tune and description by Mac with additional pictures and stories from members of our music community.

County Sales Music Videos

Since the move to the new location on S Locust St in downtown Floyd, County Sales has had the opportunity to shoot videos with some of the music’s top artists before their shows at The Floyd Country Store. Including acts like Peter Rowan, The Seldom Scene, and High Fidelity, these videos showcase artists in our beautiful store with great sound quality. It’s like a Tiny Desk series for bluegrass! Also, catch videos from our partnership with BeeHive Productions and Peluso Microphone Lab from our time at the International Bluegrass Music Association’s World of Bluegrass last fall. Catch videos by your favorite artists, and learn about some new ones that will blow you away.

These music videos are released on the County Sales YouTube channel. Make sure to subscribe, we’ve got lots more to upload!

Recorded Concerts & Workshops

Over the past year and a half, the Floyd Country Store has live-streamed countless Jamborees, Radio Shows, and concerts, and our Facebook and Youtube pages are full of excellent musical content. In addition to the live streams, throughout the year we shared video footage from past events that were not previously released. Be sure to catch shows by Redd Volkaert, Bill and The Belles, Sammy Shelor & Friends, Virtual Floyd Radio Shows, and more!

In addition to concerts and show footage, The Handmade Music School launched Handmade at Home, a virtual workshop series through Crowdcast featuring lessons in traditional instruments, singing, dance, and lectures on music and area history. These were live workshops that are all available for replay by donation, with over 80 workshops and lectures!
