Your Go-to Stop for Classic Sweet Treats in Floyd!
The Soda Fountain, located next door to the Floyd Country Store, offers old-fashioned ice cream and soda favorites in a classic parlor setting. It’s your one-stop shop for specialty soda floats, milkshakes, malts, sundaes, ice cream sandwiches, and traditional ice cream cups and cones. Waffle cones, waffle bowls, hot fudge, and peanut butter sauce are made in-house, and select ice cream flavors are sourced locally from Homestead Creamery. Other ice cream flavors are sourced from Tillamook and Hershey’s.
“We wanted to create a space that celebrates the American tradition of the soda fountain and is a fun social space for our community,” says co-owner Heather Krantz.
As an extension of the Floyd Country Store, the Soda Fountain’s old-fashioned atmosphere is infused with Appalachian music history. Signature sundaes and ice cream sodas are named after classic Appalachian tunes, from “Buffalo Gal” to “John Brown’s Dream.”
Even with its connections to the Floyd Country Store, the Soda Fountain is an experience in its own right. With its checkerboard floor, low-hanging lamps, and barstool seating options, its atmosphere is reminiscent of the fashionable yet cozy 1920s soda fountains that provided non-alcoholic craft beverages during the prohibition era. The Soda Fountain’s signature L-shaped counter was inspired by the drugstore counters of the 1950s, where kids gathered after school to hang out and enjoy oversized malted milkshakes.
Many local businesses came together to make the dream of the Soda Fountain come to life. Construction company Omnibuild remodeled the space, and St. Pierre Woodworking built the sleek wooden bench seating and crafted the wall-sized menu boards from reclaimed wood from barns in Floyd County. Phoenix Hardwoods created the tabletops and counters, and talented sign painter Greg Locke created the classic signage on the windows and doors, as well as the hanging wooden sign outside the front door. The menu items on the menu board were printed by Finn Graphics.
“We are so pleased to have such a diverse and talented community that allows us to keep so much work right here in Floyd,” says co-owner Dylan Locke. “These local businesses not only are able to do the work, but what they do is exceptional, and we are honored to showcase their efforts through our business.”
