Downtown Floyd is now a lot sweeter!
The Soda Fountain offers classic favorites such as specialty soda floats, milkshakes, malts, sundaes, ice cream sandwiches and even homemade waffles. The ice cream is made locally by Homestead Creamery. “Its a big switch for us to make but we believe in supporting local and regional companies first whenever we can” says co-owner Heather Krantz, “and Homestead is a wonderful company with amazing products.” Many of the toppings, waffle cones, and desserts are made in-house or locally as well.
“We wanted to create a space that celebrates the American tradition of the soda fountain and a fun social space for our community,” says co-owner Heather Krantz.
“We decided to add our own musical spin to it,” Krantz added. “You’ll see names of fiddle tunes on the menu, such as our Golden Slippers ice cream soda,” a float that includes lemon soda and lemon crunch ice cream.
The inspiration for the new addition to the Floyd County Store offering came from a mixing of the 1920s soda fountains that provided non-alcoholic craft beverages during the prohibition-era; and 1950s pharmacy counters, where kids would come to hang out and enjoy a malted milkshake after school.
Many local businesses came together to make the dream of the Soda Fountain come to life. Construction company Omnibuild did the heavy lifting of the remodel. Bill St Pierre crafted the large menu board that takes up one of the walls from reclaimed wood, and built the bench seating on the opposite wall. The tabletops and counters were created by Phoenix Hardwoods. The classic painting on the windows, doors and the wooden building sign were done by the talented sign-painter Greg Locke. Each of the flavors on the big menu board were printed by Finn Graphics.
“We are so pleased to have such a diverse and talented community that allows us to keep so much work right here in Floyd,” says co-owner Dylan Locke. “These local businesses not only are able to do the work, but what they do is exceptional; and we are honored to showcase their efforts through our business.”are
