Our Story
Nestled just a stone’s throw from Floyd County’s only traffic light, The Floyd Country Store sits at the very heart of our vibrant community. For well over a century, this historic space has served as a gathering place for locals, travelers, and passersby alike.
First opening its doors as a downtown general store in the early 1900s, the space underwent a cultural transformation in the early 1980s. Then known as Cockram’s General Store, it became the epicenter of the local Appalachian music and dance scene when musicians and dancers began gathering weekly to share tunes and camaraderie—a tradition that blossomed into the famous Friday Night Jamboree.
Today, the Store remains a proud beacon of Appalachian culture, celebrated for bringing people together through traditional music, dance, art, and food. Whether you are a lifelong resident or a curious wanderer, we invite you to join a workshop, share a delicious house-made meal, step back in time at our old-fashioned Soda Fountain, or experience one of our many live events.
Owned and operated by Dylan Locke and Heather Krantz since 2014, The Floyd Country Store is dedicated to cultivating and strengthening community through experiences rooted deeply in Appalachian traditions.
As co-owner Dylan Locke describes, “We have so much care for this community—our team, the musicians, the dancers, the makers, and the guests who find us by chance or make planned pilgrimages to see these traditions alive and well. There is power and magic in music-making, dancing, sharing, and living within a small community where you come together more than you separate. The simple act of playing music together, dancing with strangers, and upholding age-old traditions is what brings us all together.”
